Task 1 Describe the type of business, purpose and ownership of 2 contrasting types of businesses. Sole Trader A sole trader is a business owned by 1 person. It does not have limited liability meaning that if it fails and creates debts the owner is personally responsible for this. Sole traderââ¬â¢s usually have to work long hours and learn about all the aspects of business as many start up businesses cannot afford to hire people to take on other tasks. The owner is responsible for everything that goes on in the business and has to do a lot of work. The owner also receives all the profit and is able to make decisions on their own. Co-operatives A cooperative is owned by the people who work for it. Employeeââ¬â¢s buy a share in the organisation and have a vote in making decisions. Members receive a share of the profits in the form of a dividend, when they leave they can take their funds back. They believe that those who do the work should get the rewards. A co-operative has limited liability. Examples of co-operatives are The Co-operative and Best western hotels. If the business fails that all the members lose the money they used to buy their share but nothing else Government Departments and Agencies Owned by the government and funded by taxes A government department is led by a government minister, usually a cabinet member. Has a considerable amount of freedom in the running of the business, but is owned and accountable to the government. A customs and Revenue office are a government department, but has agencies that run under them with a smaller degree of control. For examples the Tax credits agency. Essay on The Odyssey Disguise To Find True Identity
The Odyssey Disguise To Find True Identity Disguise To Find True Identity The Odyssey is an epic that shapes and defines the roles of many great leaders. These leaders are made up of mortals, alive and dead, and immortals. The trip taken by Odysseus is not only a journey of a war hero back to his homeland, but is a journey in all of the characters lives, which develop a better sense of personal identity and selfhood as the epic goes on. It is the many disguises that each character uses that uncover their true identities from their experiences. The revelations of each characters identity are what teach the lessons that Homer is trying to portray to his audience, and what lead to each characterââ¬â¢s success in their personal journey.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Homer effectively uses the content and style of the speeches at the assembly to reveal the types and natures of the characters. Encouraged by Athena, Telemakhos takes the speakerââ¬â¢s staff and demonstrates that he is quickly becoming a man capable of speaking up to the suitors. Athenaâ â¬â¢s next identity disguise comes as Mentor and then Telemakhos to prepare and aid his journey to find information on his fatherââ¬â¢s whereabouts. As Athena leaves Pylos, Telemakhosââ¬â¢ first stop, in the form of a hawk, Nestor reassures Telemakhos of his bright future when he says, ââ¬Å"My dear child, I can have no fears for you, no doubt about your conduct or your heart, if, at your age, the gods are your companions.â⬠(III, 407-409) Here, Homer shows Telemakhosââ¬â¢ eventual identity through his maturation. Athena eventually uses her disguised identities to help Odysseus get back to his kingdom in Ithaka. Disguised as a young peasant, she leads Odysseus to the palace of Alkinoos and Arete on the island of Phaiakia and tells him to win Areteââ¬â¢s favor to receive help. She then disguises herself as Alkinoosââ¬â¢ herald, Pontinoos, to arrange his next crew to escort him home. Thereââ¬â¢s no exact way to measure self confidence, but there are proven ways to increase self confidence. Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions 1. 1 Change or remove the negative components that surround your life. Donââ¬â¢t let others bog down your life and keep you from reaching the success you have in front of you. Recon negative environmental factors in your life that influence how you feel about yourself. Sometimes this will mean shedding bad friends from your life or even making a whole new change in your social circle. 2. 2 My next step or tool for you to become confident is to change ââ¬Å"what you can. Looks are not as important to mature adults as many think, but what we do with our looks does matter. You may never have the celebrity looks, but you can make the best with what you were given. Go to the gym, or run, or do yoga. Anything that will make you feel better about yourself and your body. Donââ¬â¢t complain that you have no boyfriend/girlfriend yet youà ¢â¬â¢re overweight or spend no time taking care of yourself. Donââ¬â¢t do it for anyone else, do it for yourself. Self confidence will only go up if you can look in the mirror and know youââ¬â¢re giving it your all. 3. 3 Quit procrastinating in your life. Well what does procrastination have to do with someone being becoming confident you might ask? You canââ¬â¢t build a high state of confidence if youââ¬â¢re stressed out because you waited to the last minute to do a college essay or pay the electric bill. Thereââ¬â¢s so many examples I could point out, but the less you leave till the last minute, the more you have time for the fun stuff in life. Stress is a confidence killer. 4. 4 Buy something that makes you feel hot about yourself. You know that feeling you get when you have on a nice shirt, some nice jeans or ladies a really nice outfit that just makes you feel sexy about yourself? You wear that outfit to work, or school or with that special someone, you just feel and do better that day. That is easy self confidence. Thereââ¬â¢s no need to go change your wardrobe and only buy really expensive clothes, but everyone should have one outfit that they can put on to give themselves a little extra pep in their step. 5. 5 Remember that you like yourself and youââ¬â¢re always looking for ways to improve yourself. When I stumbled upon self compliments, I turned a new page in my quest to become a more confident person. Every day tell yourself that you like yourself or that you are a great person 10 times. EVERY DAY. Itââ¬â¢ll become habit after awhile and itââ¬â¢ll become cemented in your sub-conscious and your self confidence will multiply by leaps and bounds. You have to like yourself first and foremost before you can care how anyone else feels about you. Just simply look at the amount of celebrities who have all the fame and money, but yet run their lives into the ground with drugs or alcohol because they dislike themselves. 6. 6 Forgive yourself and others. I had to let go of a lot of bad feelings I had about what Iââ¬â¢d done/not done in my past and how others treated me in my past. You canââ¬â¢t change the past and itââ¬â¢ll only keep your progress limited if you keep harboring bad feelings. Forgive yourself and others. Ontario Teachers Pension Plan free essay sample
Ontario Teacherââ¬â¢s Pension Plan Board: Hedging Foreign Currency Exposure Ontario Teacherââ¬â¢s Pension Plan Board: Hedging Foreign Currency Exposure Issue Identification The Ontario Teacherââ¬â¢s Pension Plan (OTPP) is a defined contribution plan that was created in 1917 to provide and administer a pension plan for Ontario school teachers. Sponsored by the Ontario Government and the Ontario Teacherââ¬â¢s Federation, the plan currently supports 343,000 teachers, former teachers and pensioners. The recent government decision to eliminate the 30% constraint on foreign investments and the increased volatility in the currency market has prompted the OTPP Investment Committee to address the following: 1. Whether to continue the International Equity Swap Program 2. Whether to administer changes to the Foreign Exchange Hedging Policy Goals and Objectives In order to come to a decision, it is necessary that any solution put forth must align with the goals and objectives of the fund. OTPP is a long-term fund determined to minimize risk, costs and the additional contributions required to fund the plan while maximizing its returns. We will write a custom essay sample on Ontario Teachers Pension Plan or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page OTPP Investment Strategy In the early 1990ââ¬â¢s the OTPP board realized that it was essential to begin investing abroad to diversify risk and to capitalize on international opportunities to achieve greater returns, given the size of the fund. However, it was not until 1996 that the Foreign Exchange Hedge Program (FX Hedge Program) was implemented in response to a significant rise in currency exposure. As the fund faced increased foreign currency risk, risk management became essential and thus, a hedging policy of 50% of its foreign currency exposure was introduced. Due to the fact that OTPP has a continual commitment in supporting its pensioners, it must expose itself to limited risk and effectively hedge against any unexpected changes in its investments. Hence, a conservative policy of hedging 50% of foreign exchange exposure was enforced. Additionally, the International Equity Swap Program (IE Swap Program) was implemented as a solution to the government restriction of 30% ownership of foreign investments. Since most assets were tied up in non-marketable Ontario Debentures, a swap program enabled OTPP to reallocate its assets. OTPP Performance Evaluation The strategic decision to diversify beyond Canada and into global markets has proved to be beneficial to the OTPP investment portfolio. It has contributed substantial value to the fund over the 10 year period (1995-2005) by reducing potential losses, since five of the six foreign currencies appreciated against the Canadian dollar. For the past 15 years, OTPP investments have also consistently outperformed the benchmark rate of returns, generating a 10-year average rate of return of 11. 4% and a gross return of $15. billion over benchmark returns. Despite the portfolioââ¬â¢s negative rate of returns in 2001-2002, it has still produced considerable investment growth in relation to the benchmark, demonstrating the strength of OTPPââ¬â¢s investment policies in risk management. However, since interest rates have declined by approximately 3% (1990-2004), the value of the pension fund has increased. This has resulted in larger amount of payments made to pen sioners. Additionally, the demographics of the OTPP plan membership have changed significantly over the past 30 years. The ratio of active members per retiree has decreased from 10:1 in the 1970s to the present ratio of 1. 6:1. Moreover, the expected years retirees rely on the pension have also increased to 29 years. All these factors have exerted a great deal of pressure on the pension plan to sustain its funding with contributions from fewer working teachers. With the foreign currency market being increasingly volatile, OTPP is concerned regarding its future ability to support pension payments. Decision Criteria The Investment Committee must consider the following criteria when deciding whether to implement changes to the International Equity Swap Program and Foreign Exchange Hedging Policy: the fundââ¬â¢s exposure to foreign exchange risk, transaction costs, and an alignment of goals and objectives of the fund. Alternative: Although OTPP has performed well in the past, the future outlook of the pension plan remains uncertain. Therefore, OTPP has four alternatives to the future direction of the fund. OTPP can continue or discontinue the IE Swap Program and maintain or revise the current 50% FX Hedge Policy. Continue/Discontinue the Swap Program Previously, the swap program was used as a means to bypass the government restriction on foreign investment. With the regulation being lifted, OTPP has to now evaluate whether the swap program remains necessary. The program has allowed OTPP to reallocate their assets cost-effectively as it eliminates OTPPââ¬â¢s cost of transacting directly in foreign exchange market. Moreover, since OTPP does not gain ownership of the securities, it has reduced the amount of cash required and limited its risk by transferring the risk to counter-parties (UBS, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, etc. ).

Role of Women in Things Fall Apart Essay Example
Role of Women in Things Fall Apart Essay Women in the Ibo society are lower in the hierarchy than men; however, they are still holders of very important roles in the Ibo society. Women seem to be useless and without any power, but at a further look into their role, a bigger significance is revealed. Even though wife beating is allowed and women are discriminated in several other ways, they still possess significant roles, such as householders, educators of the children and caretakers of crops. Women also function as spiritual leaders and other important roles in the Ibo religion. Women in ââ¬Å"Things Fall Apartâ⬠are in general thought of as the weaker sex. At a first glance, women are the laborers, and the producers of children. They are not respected as real people, but are more just the menââ¬â¢s property. All they have to do is to be good housewives, and make sure to please their husband at all times. For this reason, women have no identity of their own; but are defined by the status or position of their husband. Women are discriminated in several ways throughout the novel. As an example on page 21, Okonkwo beats up his first wife for not returning home to cook the afternoon meal. We will write a custom essay sample on Role of Women in Things Fall Apart specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Role of Women in Things Fall Apart specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Role of Women in Things Fall Apart specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer In this specific example, he has to pay a penalty for beating up his wife during the ââ¬Ëweek of peaceââ¬â¢, although it seems perfectly normal and acceptable for the men to beat up their wives on other times of the year. Similarly, it is okay for the men to talk down to the women, and treat them however they want. The men are in control, and women have no say when it comes to decision-making around the house. It is an insult for a man to be called a woman. For instance, Okonkwo call his own father, Unoka, a woman because of the way he lived, taking loans and surviving in debts. He is ashamed of him and of being his son, so Unoka is only worth the title of a female. Another example is where Okonkwo kills his new ââ¬Ësonââ¬â¢, Ikemefuma and command himself to not ââ¬Å"become like a shivering old woman. â⬠(45) He doesnââ¬â¢t want to appear weak to the people, and ââ¬Ëa shivering old womanââ¬â¢ is the equivalent of weak. But, women have important roles in the society as well, so the characterization made so far is rather limiting. Women are, first off, the primary educators of the children. Through storytelling and using their own experiences, they educate the kids and socialize them at the same time. They are also the only labor when it comes to cooking and taking care of the household. In addition to these roles, we also observe women doing other stuff of importance throughout the novel. As an example, ââ¬Å"the women weeded the farm three times at definite periods in the life of the yams, neither early or late. (24) This is a really important job, because if itââ¬â¢s done incorrectly, the yam harvest will fail. Sometimes women take spiritual roles in the novel. Chielo, the priestess of Agbala, the Oracle of the hill and the Caves (49) is a good example of this. She is the priestess in the novel, and her authority is unquestioned. When she comes to pick up Enzinma, Okonkwo asks her to come back the next day instead, but she disagrees; Beware Okonkwo! she warned. Beware of exchanging words with Agbala. Does a man speak when a god speaks? Beware! (71) She is not only going against Okonkwoââ¬â¢s will, but also threatening him at the same time. As a respond, Okonkwo does nothing but accepts it and shows respect because of her spiritual role as priestess. This is the only time in the novel that Okonkwo plead with anyone, male or female. Another example of a woman possessing a spiritual role in the Ibo religion could be the earth goddess, Ani. Ani played a greater part in the life of the people than any other deity. She was the ultimate judge of morality and conduct. And what more, she was in close communion with the departed fathers of the clan whose bodies had been committed to earth. â⬠(26) It doesnââ¬â¢t make any sense that a society who views women as the weakest, would present their most powerful deity as a woman. Ani is very important to the Ibo society. The week of peace, for instance, is only to honor the earth goddess, so the crops will be okay. This statement is strongly supported by Okonkwoââ¬â¢s example when he breaks the peace of Ani and beats his wife. It all goes down to honor the women. On the whole, thereââ¬â¢s a strong sense of repression of the women, but they still have great significance to the Ibo society. They fill out roles that the men are not able to fill out. They provide their labor to the household in form of cooking and cleaning, they teach the kids through storytelling and they help out in the crop fields as well. In religion they are honored more than men. Chielo and Aniââ¬â¢s roles as priestess and earth goddess, respectively, are of great contribution to the importance of women in the Ibo culture. To sum up, the culture and the religion wouldnââ¬â¢t survive without the women.

Working with GIF images in Delphi
Working with GIF images in Delphi Even though Delphi does not natively support GIF image files formats (like BMP or JPEG), there are a few great (free source) components available on the Net, which add the ability to display and manipulate GIF images at run as well as at design time to any Delphi application. Natively, Delphi supports BMP, ICO, WMF, and JPG images. These can be loaded into a graphics-compatible component (such as TImage) and used in an application. Its important to note that, as of Delphi version 2006, GIF format is supported by the VCL. To use animated GIF images you would still need a third-party control. GIFsor Graphics Interchange Formatsare the most widely supported (bitmap) graphics format on the Web, both for still images and for animations. Using in Delphi Natively, Delphi (until version 2007) does not support GIF images, due to some legal copyright issues. What this means, is that when you drop a TImage component on a form, use the Picture Editor (click the ellipsis button in the Value column for properties, such as the Picture property of TImage) to load an image into the TImage, you will not have an option to load GIF images. Fortunately, there are a few third-party implementations on the Internet that provide full support for the GIF format: TGIFImage: free with source (a version of Anders Melanders TGIFImage ported to Delphi 7). Full TGraphic implementation of the GIF graphics format. Reads, writes and displays animated and transparent GIFs and can convert to and from any format supported by TGraphic (e.g TBitmap, TJPEGImage, TIcon, TMetaFile, etc.). Implements the complete GIF87a and GIF89a specification and most common GIF extensions. Advanced features include:Integrates with TPicture to add GIF support to the TImage, TOpenPictureDialog and TSavePictureDialog components. Also works at design time.Imports images with more than 256 colors using color quantization and 6 different dithering methods (e.g. Floyd-ââ¬â¹Steinberg).Multi-threaded drawing engine.GIF optimizer reduces the size of your GIFs.GIF to AVI and AVI to GIF converter.GraphicEx image library: an addendum to Delphis Graphics.pas to enable your application to load many common image formats. This library is primarily designed to load images as background ( buttons, forms, toolbars) and textures (DirectX, OpenGL) or for image browsing and editing purposes as long as you dont need to save images. Currently, only TTargaGraphic also supports saving an image. GraphicEx is open source under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Thats about it. Now all you have to do is to download one of the components and start using gif images in your applications. You can, for example: Store GIF images in a database table.
